Opaque watercolour painting on European paper of a goldsmith, his wife and son. Seated on a carpet, the goldsmith works at a small table on which are a number of gold ornaments. He wears a dhoti with a red temple-design border, a yajnopavita (sacred thread) hangs across his chest and a ‘wave-pattern’ turban is wound around his head. Earrings and an armlet on his right arm complete his attire. On his forehead are a tripundra (three horizontal lines) and a tilaka. Near the table is an open wooden chest. Opposite him stands his wife, carrying a tray with various objects. She wears a sari and ornaments. A youth in a dhoti, his hair tied in a knot, sits on the floor near a basket of wood, blowing on the fire.
